Just a couple of thoughts from tonight:

  • We don’t want to try to sell anything. We’re seeing what God is already doing and want to be a part of it–we don’t want our congregation to miss out on a chance to be a part of it.
  • Why did we pick this opportunity? We’ve been looking for a church plant opportunity for a couple of years because we don’t want to become “ingrown” or just focused on ourselves. Last year we could have been involved in a plant in Vegas but the pieces never came together. This year we met Moses early in the process and have watched him grow and build this new plant over the last few months.
  • This is a great investment. Because we’re partnering with 2 other churches and the denomination we only have to raise $20,000 to plant a new church.

Blessed are the poor because they can participate!
The only knowledge that can set you free is the knowledge gained from apprenticeship, not from sitting on the sidelines
The New Self
I think we should spend a lot of time meditating on these verses
We have a fight for our mind
Jesus tells us to renew our mind and Satan is always fighting for it
We need to think about our thinking
If I don’t think about it, I can dwell on images that don’t reflect truth
The Bible is chock full of images that project truth
Try to fully visualize a house built on sand our the bread of life
Who is the bread of life? Jesus. Think about Him becoming one with us on a molecular level
Those habitual behaviors
Wouldn’t it be great if we had the obedience to automatically bless that person who just cut us off on the freeway?

Moments of “Don’t I deserve this”…are we supposed to deny those?
Paradoxes
Letting go of the right to be the protagonist
When 2 protagonists get together nobody volunteers to be the deuteragonists
They fence back and fourth, parry thrust
What happens I’d I really let go of the spotlight
See the other person’s movie going on
What if I choose a supporting role for the people on my life?
I was really busy this morning getting ready to speak and noticed the dishwasher needed to be emptied
First thought was I’m really busy, Jeami will understand
Then I realized what I’d been preparing to say today and emptied it
Then I started thinking about how much praise I was going to get for emptying it
Are we supposed to deny that?

I want to be in charge for a day on my birthday
Can we lay a path for selfish people by being selfless towards them?
I think about Jesus on the cross, what He did
Setting up his mother with John, remembering the thief on the cross
He’s a footnote to the crucifixion, but he has his own story; parents, a crime leading to this punishment
What does it mean to lay your life down
Nobody wakes up trying to be a villain
No believers are twirling their mustaches, trying to ruin your life
I’m going to try fasting from the words I, me, my
A little less me, a little more you
C.S. Lewis – inclined to think He has done enough
God is building a different house than you thought
Only one hero in humanity and that’s Jesus Christ

Several years ago I was lied to by someone I loved very much
Buried it very deep in my heart
Fast forward several years
New to the Rock and somebody after service asked me how I was doing and I honestly responded about this low-grade anger inside of me
Suddenly I had 7 guys fasting for me and praying for me for a week
It didn’t solve everything but the anger subsided and it wouldn’t have healed as quickly without their support

One thing in here really hits me

Every first Tuesday of the month we have a lunchtime prayer meeting

I was at the car dealership and was talking about food with this Morrocan man
God showed up in that moment and he started sharing very personal information with me, and all I could do was ask him if I could pray for him
The glory of God showed up at the Nissan dealership the other day, you should have been.there, it was epic!
They very specifically prayed for Peter’s release

He was working on IT stuff and normally didn’t work there, but that morning they were all called in for a meeting

Ten years ago I was assigned in Marina Del Rey
Watched the events unfold as the devastation of those who hate what America stands for
Waiting at LAX and eerily watching every plane, wondering
Volunteered to go digging through the rubble
6 funerals and 10 wakes
Went to St. Peters when Rudy Guilliani spoke
Later as we walked past Ground Zero we saw the two crossed beams that have now been moved as a memorial
Some other firefighters asked if we had come from LA County
We formed a procession for a firefighter’s body recently pulled from the rubble, standing at attention
One funeral procession for an Italian fire chief who was also a soccer coach
How many times have people said, I want my daddy back
I’m a simple guy, a public servant
Those who died that day are public servants
I’m prepared to give my life to save people
That’s what God has called me to do
Thank you for coming tonight to honor those who fell

I want to pray for them
I want to pray for the military, those who have and are serving

It’s the 6 month anniversary of the Japanese earthquakes and tsunamis

Bookend to this evening on what Brother Kirk spoke of
Fully committed to His purposes
Are we carrying the torch of the gospel faithfully?
Let us make the most of every opportunity we have

If we’re not careful, we try and put meaning on it and talking for God instead of listening
Look at Job, the three men looking for meaning and they’re wrong

God doesn’t point fingers, this isn’t a time to point fingers, but a time to examine ourselves and realize that we’re not in control
God steps into disaster and sometimes is just there, other times builds up and rebuilds

I’m reminded of Jesus mourning Lazarus
To Martha, He says I am the resurrection and the life

Mary asks the same question (Why?!?!) and she gets tears
It strikes me as a sermon that Jesus weeps
Why is He weeping because He knows He will turn it around
How are we as a community supposed to respond?

Christianity is something that takes us up

Some kind of power converted him
Is that how conversion is supposed to be? Cuz mine wasn’t that sparkly
Last week the Ethiopian fisherman had a simple conversion
There are some commonalities
Up until this point, Saul had a very good idea of who God was
A couple of chapters ago, Stephen said we don’t need the temple or the rituals
Rubbed Saul the wrong way, sounded like absolutely blasphemy
First question when Saul meets Jesus? Who are you?
Saul had a lot of Bible knowledge and understanding
He was still deeply unsettled and restless
