The musical adaptation of Federico Fellini’s “8 1/2″ is wonderfully pulled off by the capable and talented cast and crew. Rarely produced it was a treat to be able to see it, especially when the understudy (Tony Torrico) gets his chance to shine as Guido Contini, a filmaker with as many lovers as creative ideas.

A Chorus Line – OCPAC
Zach reminded me of Robin Williams and Alan Tudyk. It is also my opinion that he would look good with the thin beard.
The humor of Val’s lines and physicality was somewhat hindered by her unnecessary Lina-Lamont-esque accent. This is yet another example of the unfortunate tendency to play the broad comedy instead of aiming for subtle humor (has intellectual comedy died?!?!?!?!?!?).
Cassie performed extraordinarily well despite being ill and rather heroically managed to keep her coughing to a minimum.
While forewarned that there was no real guitar and that necessary “licks” were synthesized, I found the absence less annoying than anticipated (beyond the opening number). The fact that the lack of a real guitar didn’t glare out of any other numbers (to me, a non-musicians) is a testament to the phenomenal orchestrations of Marvin Hamlisch. Not to say the show should always be done sans (or synthed) guitar – it’s just an interesting alternative concept.
Judy Turner said she wanted to be Tina Turner….apparently Lana Turner isn’t a household name in America anymore…
Other than that, the show was an exemplary national tour (I still liked Brea’s regional performance better though).
Oh. And it was hilarious to watch a mother pull her daughter out of the theatre (with what I can only assume was a disgusted, outraged look on her face) during “Dance Ten, Looks Three (Tits and Ass)”. Although in partial defense (actually out of brute curiosity), I wonder how a parent is supposed to reliably find out if a show is appropriate for their child…I mean sure you can search the internet for details of the show and judge for yourself, but not all internet reviews are reliable judges of content. Of course I know this mom knew NOTHING about the show and didn’t ask anybody about it before bringing her pre-pubescent daughter to it. I hope she’s learned her lesson.
The Marvelous Wonderettes – Laguna Beach Playhouse
Parking was a nightmare because the Pageant of the Masters was happening. Wheee….
This is a really enjoyable jukebox musical featuring hit songs from the 50′s and 60′s by Andrew Bean (The Andrews Brothers and lots more). My godmother Janet Miller is the original choreography (she’s in New York right now helping the show open off Broadway) and I first saw the show in it’s extended initial run at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, and enjoyed it very much, especially since it was a small space. While it translates well to the larger Laguna stage, I think a black box setting works better. No, I’m not baised!
The costumes changed, but they were still nice throwbacks to the 50′s and 60′s.
Cast featured original cast members Bets Malone and Julia Dixon-Jackson and newcomer Misty Cotton (from Sideshow at the Colony Theatre with Jackson and Spitfire Grill at Laguna Beach).
The Past Month In Entertainment
My Fair Lady
It had the understudy London Mary Poppins as Eliza Doolittle, Marni Nixon as Henry Higgins’ mother and an enthusiastic, Step-In-Time-esque version of With A Little Bit of Luck.
Watching this version, it was a stark realization of how much you don’t want to like Alfred Doolittle, but you still end up laughing at his antics…or at least I did….
The lighting was really dim, the set was very impressive and pretty (high arches that you could see stars through!), Henry Higgins was too damn quiet….but still a production worth seeing.
Wedding Singer
I hadn’t seen the movie before seeing the musical, but it was quite a treat seeing the caliber of performance. No wonder – it’s from the California Conservatory of the Arts (David Green’s post-OCHSA academy of the performing arts). Great 80′s music and lots of comedy.
Then, having seen the movie (yay Netflix!), it was nice to see how the source material was treated when adapting the film to a stage musical – especially since it was done so well.
Monkey Business: The Life Times of the Marx Brothers by Simon Louvish
A fascinating and delightful analysis/expository of the lives of Leonard, Arthur, Julius, Milton and Herbert Marx (a.k.a. Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo and Zeppo; a.k.a. The Marx Brothers), this book was on my shelf for years before I started having a Marx Brothers overload as it were: I saw Frank Ferrante do his one man Groucho show and some friends perform Groucho: A Life In Revue. So I chose to dig in with my own research and read this book.
Simon Louvish has done a wonderful job digging into all sorts of historical archives to isolate the truth beneath the sheen of legend that the Marx Brothers painted their lives with. From genealogical sheets to MGM script draft reports, Louvish unearths nuggets of gold concerning the brothers lives, loves and performances from vaudeville and Broadway to the silver screen and airwaves. With all the details he has collected, we see a much more 3-dimensional portrait of each of the brothers and their family. A highly recommended read for any Marx Brothers fan.
You Don’t Mess With The Zohan
Amusing. Adam Sandler as an Israeli super-counter-terrorist: the one they call on when they want to minimize collateral damage. But “The Zohan” is tired of the endless fighting, so he comes to America to cut and style hair….and screw old women. Seriously. But he falls in love and can no longer make the “bing bam boom” with his customers and there’s this whole thing about terrorists and Israeli versus Palestinians….
It’s funny…
Get Smart
Very enjoyable comedy homage to the brilliant work of Don Adams and Mel Brooks. Steve Carrell is awesome as Maxwell Smart, Anne Hatheway is sexy as Agent 99, Dwayne Johnson (what happened to The Rock?) is violently perfect as Agent 23 and Alan Arkin is wonderfully poised as the Chief. Toss in mystery, intrigue, betrayal, double-crosses, a couple of “missed it by that much”, a handful of “would you believe”, Masi Oka, Patrick Warburton, Bill Murray and a smidgen of predictability and you have a delightful comedy tribute to the brilliance of Don Adams and Mel Brooks.
WALL-E
Pixar knocks another one out of the park. This film is a brilliant addition to the Pixar canon. The soundtrack is beautiful and epic, the visuals are stunning, the sound engineering is spot on (yay Ben Burtt!) and the story (Pixar’s bread and butter) is romantic and wistful and funny and just perfect.
Yay for A113 references, John Ratzenberger (hopefully when he dies he will license his voice to Pixar so they can digitally recreate his voice patterns for future movies), Fred Willard and the PC (WALL-E) vs. MAC (EVE) battle on the big screen!
Waste Allocation Load Lifter – Earth class (or Axiom class on the Axiom) = WALL-E
Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator (?) = EVE which doesn’t actually make sense: why is it Extraterrestrial? It’s going to Earth, terra firma! It should be Terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator unless I’m missing the purpose of the word Extraterrestrial…whatever.
Groucho: A Life In Revue – OnStage Playhouse
They may call themselves a community theatre, but the performances are nothing less than Broadway. The show, co-authored by Groucho’s oldest son Arthur, takes place in the memories of Julius “Groucho” Marx as he guides through the up-and-down cycle that was his career in show business.
One definite highlight of the show was the directorial choice to split Chico and Harpo into separate actors. This allowed tender moments and lots of comedy. Harpo does the famous knife-dropping act from “Animal Crackers” and does an entire charades bit with Chico. Chico does incredibly well, playing all his own music!!!!!at old women gallery

The Andrews Brothers – Musical Theatre West
A most amusing musical with a 4 person cast, from the guy who brought us the The Marvelous Wonderettes (Roger Bean). Chronicling the madcap mayhem that ensues when three brothers have to double duty their stage hand duties and perform on stage at a USO show when the Andrews Sisters get chicken pox, this is a highly enjoyable jukebox musical featuring the greatest hits of Patti, Maxine and Laverne. I hate that the program isn’t in show order, but just a list of the songs used because there were some REALLY GOOD medleys that I would love to hear again (luckily the author’s website has the accurate song listings…yay!). Starring David Engel, Stan Chandler and *Patrick* as the brothers and *Peggy* as Peggy Jones the pin-up girl, the show has lots of energy and is really funny. Not to mention great music…it was torture to have to sit and listen instead of being able to dance. I highly recommend checking this show out.
Urinetown – Cerritos College
THEY DID THE BUNNY HOP DURING THE FINAL CHORUS OF DON’T BE THE BUNNY!!!! OMFG!!!! IT FITS PERFECTLY AND IT’S HILARIOUS!
This is the fifth production of this musical that I’ve seen (on Broadway, technically off-Broadway; the national tour at OCPAC; PCPA Theatrefest in Solvang; Laguna Beach High School) and I learn something new every time I see it. It is such a brilliantly constructed musical with thought-provoking content wrapped in comedy that I could see it five more times and still not be tired of it. The music is jazzy and fun, the dialogue and lyrics pop with cynicism and wit and the characters are lovable despite of, and even for, their depravity.
Now enough ranting about how great the show is. Some minor negative values for this production: it is a community college production run by community college students for many of whom this is their first time. Light cues were a little slow and fast at times, but then again I saw it opening night and the quality can only improve with more runs. But it’s not all bad for this production: the set is fascinatingly Brechtian in it’s simplicity (simple scaffolding giving the actors the minimal amount of levels and space they need to accomplish their tasks) and most of the actor’s are ringers brought in from outside the college. Directed by my godmother, Janet Miller (no I’m not just writing a positive review for her, appearances to the contrary), it includes a lot of people she’s worked with previously at the Torrance Theatre Company, and the majority turn in fabulous performances (I was slightly displeased with Old Man Strong/Hot Blades Harry as the two characters were far too similar). The cast includes Steve DeForrest, Michael Immel, Marty Baum, Craig Proctor and Erich Schroder.
All in all, a decent production with plenty of hilarity! Highly recommended.
And I love what they did with the restrooms.
City of Angels – Cal State Fullerton
A decent production of one of my favorite musicals, my first complaint is with the program. It kind of awkwardly describes whats actually going on in the play. It says that the story has two plot lines: one is an author writing the screenplay of one of his novels and the other is that same author dealing with the Hollywood politics as his screenplay is torn to shreds (or something to that effect). It also has two “cast lists”: the Hollywood cast and the movie cast. It is kind of hard at first blush to interpret that statement if you’re unfamiliar with the play, so let me try and lay it out for you in a less confusing manner.
Stine, the author of City of Angels, is adapting his novel into a screenplay for his director, Buddy Fidler. While Stine is writing the screenplay, we see the film noir detective story unfold on stage, starring private detective and former LA policeman Stone as he gets wrapped up in one of the most brilliant mysteries since Dashiell Hammett first wrote about that damned black bird.
This production features a lot of talented performances (especially Buddy Fidler and Donna), but the real star of the show is the stagecraft. Fullerton is known for it’s stagecraft and the vision they bring to life here is nothing short of brilliant. Dozens of motorized platforms move the set about, making the scene changes dynamic and smooth. The curtains behave like the lens of a camera, focusing our attention during the film on the movie characters as they act out their story.
The costumes were very nicely done, but I wish that the film noir aspect could have been further emphasized through use (or lack) of color for those characters’ costumes. But it wasn’t my first complaint about the show.
I don’t want to be overly picky, but oh well: Stine was (in my opinion) the weakest singer on stage. He did all right, but he could have been better…sigh…oh well.
This is one of my favorite musicals (Cy Coleman is one of my all time favorite musical composers) and this production definitely did it justice.

Sweeney Todd – Ahmanson Theatre
It’s closed now so you missed it, but it was definitely an interesting experience. It was REALLY nice to see the musical again after the movie since there were bits and pieces that I missed in the movie that are SO delicious on stage (mostly the main chorus – “Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd”). It was a very interesting performance because they make 2 major departures from the traditional presentation of it:
1) The play is more symbolic than realistic, taking place in a mental ward, allowing for each of the actors to extend their character into a psychological condition. Also there’s far less actual violence than in the original. For every death, a bucket of “blood” is transfered for another bucket and that character puts on a bloodied doctor’s coat for the remainder of the show. Also the “chair” which is a really cool part of the non-symbolic show was a small white coffin that Sweeney carried around which was interesting….
2) The cast of 10 people WAS the orchestra and onstage the entire time. The Beadle was hidden upstage most of the show playing his VERY nice keyboard. Tobias played the violin (which according to my dad is incredible for this musical because Tobias’ singing part is a HALF STEP away from the violin part and he was a masterful performer). Mrs. Lovett played the tuba for at least one song and Sweeney played like three notes on his trumpet since he’s pretty much always doing something. Joanna and Anthony played cello’s which was a really nice counterpoint to their love story.
The entire show is very carefully coordinated/constructed/choreographed as the actors manipulate not only the minimalist, symbolic set pieces but their instruments
and it was very impressive to watch.
Now it didn’t bother me that much, but it drove the rest of my group insane that Mrs. Lovett’s costume was more 1940′s Nazi Germany than Victorian London. “She looked like an old Sally Bowles with all those sparkles”….but whatever.
A very interesting take on the musical and serves as a delightful companion to the visual treat that the movie is…even if Tim Burton leans atheist (wouldn’t let the chorus sing “God that’s good!” in the song, didn’t include the bit about the priest meat pie being “Heavenly!”).
The crowd at the Ahmanson on Friday night was unusually rowdy and uncultured. Sigh…
All Shook Up – MTW
This show is just so much fun. Set to the music of Elvis Presley, it’s traditionally described as James Dean meets Shakespeare (specifically Twelfth Night and A Midsummer’s Night Dream) and it’s a very enjoyable romantic jukebox musical.
I have no complaints about any of the performances. I get to hate old people again because there’s one song that takes place in a “statue garden” and then it breaks into this musical number and the statues move about (they’re really people). The audience decided to applaud for the statues after their first movement. I GOTTA stop going to matinées….
There was also a really weird 4th wall break that happened midway through the second act….Chad (the Elvis/James Dean character) says something and a group of people behind and to the left of me (rear house left) shouted/screamed an affirmative answer and he broke the wall to go, “Yeah!” It was odd…but not horrible?
The cast was actually quite star studded. Bets Malone played Natalie (the lead girl who falls for Chad) and did a wonderful job. Natalie’s father, Jim, was played by the actor who played Doody in the movie version of Grease. It was interesting for me because when I saw the national tour his character was a balding, overweight mechanic and having him become “cool” was much more amusing than this time around. You can also tell that Doody is a dancer, because he moves very well for his age. And John Massey Jr. stepped in as Sheriff Earl, the town mayor’s enforcer. It was mildly amusing seeing such a talented actor play that role with the think pilot glasses and the Midwest officer-of -the-law uniform, but I didn’t double over with laughter when I saw him…maybe I expected too much? Who knows.
All in all, a very enjoyable production that I’m glad I saw.
