Exodus 33 is my favorite chapter, its where the name of this church comes from
v. 15-23
Exodus 33
The Command to Leave Sinai
1The LORD said to Moses, “Depart; go up from here, you(A) and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To(B) your offspring I will give it.’ 2I will send an(C) angel before you,(D) and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 3(E) Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey;(F) but I will not go up among you,(G) lest I consume you on the way, for you are a(H) stiff-necked people.”
4When the people heard this disastrous word, they(I) mourned, and(J) no one put on his ornaments. 5For the LORD had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a(K) stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would(L) consume you. So now(M) take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’” 6Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.
The Tent of Meeting
7Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and(N) he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who(O) sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. 8Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and(P) each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. 9When Moses entered the tent, the(Q) pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the LORD[a] would speak with Moses. 10And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. 11Thus(R) the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his(S) assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
Moses’ Intercession
12Moses said to the LORD, “See,(T) you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said,(U) ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ 13Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please(V) show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is(W) your people.” 14And he said,(X) “My presence will go with you, and(Y) I will give you rest.” 15And he said to him,(Z) “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people?(AA) Is it not in your going with us,(AB) so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”
17And the LORD said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do,(AC) for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18Moses said, “Please(AD) show me your glory.” 19And he said,(AE) “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And(AF) I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for(AG) man shall not see me and live.” 21And the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22and while my glory passes by I will put you in a(AH) cleft of the rock, and I will(AI) cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall(AJ) not be seen.”
A prayer for God’s glory
Then the people realized that they needed God’s glory
Chapter 32 Israel gets restless and builds a golden calf to worship
Moses begs God for help and God says I can’t deal with you, if I did I would probably kill you
Moses builds a tent of meeting outside of the camp
Moses would ask God’s advice and emerge with his face glowing from His glory
God’s giving us success without His presence
Moses says heck no
Life without God is absolutely pointless
Moses is refusing to succeed without God’s presence defining him
My concern is where is the hunger?
Has apathy and complacency set in, preventing us from hungering for Him?
When that aching void is there, you need God
God’s presence stretches out the human heart so that nothing else will satisfied
There’s gotta be more than this
What is that prayer for glory? What does it look like?
We need God’s glory
Glory = weightiness
When something’s important, we talk about it, we sing songs about it, we write about it
33 v. 6
Ornaments were equivalent to wealth and a person’s significance, their glory, power
Every one had to identify where they were stripping glory from God
We all have a drive to be significant
Tell me my sermon was bad, just don’t ignore it
We go through great measures to gain significance
Ask yourselves – where am I trying to get the glory instead of God getting the glory?
This passage doesn’t explicitly say money is an evil idol
It’s what money brings to us
Rich AND poor stripped themselves or their ornaments
Identify your golden calves
Where do I spend my money effortlessly? This is just where it needs to go
What am I giving my time, energy, money to?
What you give value to, you become a function of
We spend a lot for recognition from other people
Rocky and Adrian
I just want to go the distance to prove I’m not a bum
They strip themselves of their glory
Can’t just say – ok
You need recognition or significance
Moses wants to SEE God’s glory
We need more of His glory
Who says to God: that’s not good enough
The reason why is because they didn’t know God
The thing that heals us is to see the glory of God
If you saw my glory it would crush you
I will show you all of my goodness
Giving us His Name
Exodus 34:6
Contradiction
God never clears the guilty
God can’t be both this and this
All of God’s goodness
Moses had to get into the rock to see all of God’s goodness
Hebrews 1:3
Everything that is God has come down and dwelt in the presence of Jesus Christ
Can’t let anything go unpunished
Have to pour it ALL out on Jesus Christ
All sins, past, present, and future have already been dealt with
Now thy we’ve been forgiven, I can heal my heart
Challenge: ask yourselves these questions
Realize that the full glory of God…

Matthew 5:14-16
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so(C) that they may see your good works and(D) give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
1 Peter 2:9
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Romans 12
A Living Sacrifice
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Called to be an alternate city within a city
When you become a Christian it’s more than a ticket to heaven
You’re invited into the kingdom – a way of living in Jesus Christ
Born again, a 2nd time
Entering into this community
Jesus is coming to His disciples
Not gonna work if it’s just Captain You
Jesus doesn’t need individual cities on a hill – be a city within a city
Unified through the Messiah
Faith and belief in who Jesus said He was
We cannot live the sermon individually – but we can corporately
Read it as an alternate city
Where do our priorities match up?
We as a community are called together
Does our city, The Rock, look like Matthew 5-7?
–Peter
Exodus language
You alone cannot be a nation
We can be a city, a culture, a holy nation
You are a holy ethnic
A culture within a ultra
Holy means set apart, distinct
Going to church is boring – BEING the church is exciting
Doesn’t mean you lose your genetic culture – Christianity doesn’t replace your culture
Jesus calls to us over the years
Missionaries miss it – they bring the Gospel to a nation and enforce white America on them
Becoming a Christian in old age, take offense at being called a baby
You haven’t just escaped into something else
I am not a Christian American – I’m a Christian who happens to be a white American
70′s classic rock white American
ALSO part of a new holy ethnic
–Romans
Paul is calling us to present our united bodies as ONE SINGLE SACRIFICE UNTO GOD
Peter said we’re a new holy ethnic
Jesus brought us out of life and we need to invite others out of the darkness and into the light
Paul constantly reminds us that we need to renew our thinking
Pouring through the scriptures together – what does this stuff mean to us today? What does it look like in 2010 in Los Angeles?
Stepping into, being adopted into Christianity
Don’t say “I have to go to my small group, it’s just another thing to do”
Temptation to assimilate into culture
We aren’t called to separate ourselves either
Shine your light for others
Assimilation is easy – but so is separation
Not dress or hairdo’s – mindset
Don’t conform to the [thinking] patterns of the world
How we do life and business and art
Don’t wait for the government to do something about the poor – that’s the job of the church
Let your light shine to others so that they can bring glory to God
Think about how this affects our mission and outreach
What does Jesus mean by great works?
We can’t individually do greater things than Jesus
There are millions of us (Christians) around the world
There are superstars that can explain the Gospel amazingly
I believe communities have a bigger impact than superstars
We start to think, ” Just let that person do it”
When we learn to love one another with passion
People will see it and say,” I don’t know how that’s happening, but the Gospel works! I want that!”
A lot of us do that – go to church like an educational environment, listen to the paid professional and say “that’s awesome”
Just a bunch of ear candy
Difference between going to and being the church
A lot of us approach it intellectually
Approach bible study individually, not community
We have to consult one another
You can protect yourself from wacky revelations by bringing it to the community
Somebody up front who we call God’s anointed and that we can’t touch – that’s how cults start
Do NOT take what I say for granted
I believe what I’m saying, I’m just a man who’s trying to understand God
If the Bible comes to us and tells us how to live – it’s not individually
Impossible to remain sexually pure as an individual
You’re my brother/sister in Christ – I’m going to help you through this
Can’t remain …
What do we do with issues of divorce
Before you move and say, “I’m going to Colorado Springs because that’s where Jesus lives”
We’re just trying to help you make the right decision with wisdom
John and Gina Mullen had an opportunity to move to San Luis Opisbo
They brought it to the community and they’re still here
Love the story in the scripture – Judas’ replacement
Seemed right to the holy spirit – to throw some dice
The dice have spoken
Sometimes in the kingdom – we’re dealing with God – hard to do individually – easier to do together
A lot of time community is just an add-on, something we do
Is the Gospel real? Has it changed your life?
A lot of people church hop because they’re not a part of the community – I’m not getting anything out of it
If you get your feelings hurt – try to work it out instead of sneaking out the backdoor
All those pastors don’t wanna pew shift
Work it out, strengthen one other, exhort one another
You know I want for my kids? I want them to be around people who love Jesus with all their hearts
200 people there? Mile wide and an inch deep
If my kids see people passionate for Jesus Christ
We may be small but we always fight above our weight class
Help young girls get their lives back
Welcome to the kingdom of heaven – now get to work

Hebrews 13:1-8
1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. 3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. 4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. 5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say,
“The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”
7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Lots of suffering listed in the paper
Not a lot in particular being printed in the LA Times about Jesus
Then there’s this passage
Money sex power and suffering and right in the middle is Jesus
Inviting Jesus Christ who is constant, consistent, permeated with sameness
Easy for the human heart to drift away from Jesus
And then we’re not asking him what to do with our money, with our sex, with our power
Take money
Bring Jesus into that discussion
Hebrews 12 talks about fixing our eyes on our champion
If we look at our money instead, if you put your hope in it, it will shift away
Analyze yesterday, today, forever as the original listeners of this letter might have heard it
Yesterday
Old covenant
God coming down as an elemental, not very approachable
Hebrews 1:2-3
2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Hebrews 1:10-12
10 And,
“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
and the heavens are the work of your hands;
11 they will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment,
12 like a robe you will roll them up,
like a garment they will be changed.
But you are the same,
and your years will have no end.”
Hebrews 3-4
Hebrews 3
Jesus Greater Than Moses
1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
A Rest for the People of God
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
“Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your fathers put me to the test
and saw my works for forty years.
10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation,and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
they have not known my ways.’
11 As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest.’”
12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,
“Today, if you hear his voice,do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
Hebrews 4
1 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2 For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,
“As I swore in my wrath,’They shall not enter my rest,’”
although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” 5 And again in this passage he said,
“They shall not enter my rest.”
6 Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, 7 again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,
“Today, if you hear his voice,do not harden your hearts.”
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. 9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Jesus the Great High Priest
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 12:24
24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
Hebrews 12:26-28
26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,
When it comes to money, Jesus is there to help us face these issues
Without Jesus, we don’t know what to do with money, sex, power, suffering
Keep bringing people in
Happened in Genesis 18
The people God brings into your life – no idea who they are
When you watch the quarterbacks eyes
Fix our eyes on Jesus we can see what He wants us to do
Inviting Him into that process
We’re going to want to visit those in suffering and those in prison
We’re called to love those in our family
Covenant relationship with another person
My heart belongs to you
Everything God is calling me for belongs to you
Money is just money when you look at Jesus, when you say “This is my happiness”, it’s hard
Welcome to marriage, $8,000 a year, 2 bedroom house rental in Michigan
Stayed up worrying about it, but fixed his eyes on Jesus and asked for a little mire cash
How do you want me to spend this
Consider your leaders, imitate their faith
Not imitate me as I imitate Jesus
Says be imitators of God
We are corporately, as a body, are called to imitate Christ
What does it mean to imitate those God has called to lead us
Cloud of witnesses
I want to finish well in
I want to look at my author in the end and …
Let our eyes be fixed on Jesus
Look at agitators the way God looks at them
