Philippians 4:4-9
22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Need to lower expectations
CS Lewis – expectations are everything, how we walk through life, hotel, honeymoon suite, described as pretty good, not very opulent, same room described as jail cell, pretty good
Always shifting and changing
As we learn to walk the road of faith with the fruits
We are constantly under attack by forces that want to destroy our peace and joy; steal our love from us
Definition of peace: confidence and trust of God’s wise control of your life
Believe that He’s a God that’s for us, not against us

Philippians 4:4-9 – 4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

All requests have to be made with thanksgiving
Not asking us to conjure up fake smile kind of joy/thanksgiving
When you choose to come to God with an attitude of thanksgiving
My perception of God isn’t perfect – need to adjust it every day
Learn how to thank Him before you even make your request
Shift – roadblocks to peace
Anxiety and worry
Greek translation of the word for anxiety and worry – to be in pieces
Athletes/musicians discipline themselves to practice
They take the things they’re learning and apply them to their life
Whatever is worthy of your praise/adoration – think of these things
Worship – I give worth/adoration to Him because He is worthy
We’re always giving worship to something, every day
Worship to the one true God
Opposite of love is fear
Opposite of joy is hopelessness
Opposite of peace is anxiety and worry
You have to talk to your heart
Psalm 42 – why are you so downcast
Sink your heart into the fruits of the Spirit – into Jesus
As a Christian…
Before you’re a Christian, you have one enemy – God; all He wants is to get a hold of your heart
After conversion, you have 3 enemies: the world, the flesh & the Devil
Joy and peace are going to fluxuate wildly
1. The world = mindset of secularism, now-ism (what matters now)
Visit a well-off friend and instead of giving praise and adoration to God for the greatness of their house/lifestyle, you envy it
Your heart gets ripped apart by someone of the opposite sex and you believe that that is all that matters
2. Flesh – selfish part that wants to be in control, desires
I know what’s best for my life God
3. Satan – you cannot make sense of the Bible unless the devil is real
Want nothing more than to destroy your peace and your joy
Try to reduce problems to one of the three enemies
Sometimes depression is so much more complex than you give it credit for
Bombarded by commercialism and what beauty is
World sends message of what beauty is, flesh takes that message and turns it into a desire for control, then Satan (word actually means accuser/prosecuter) and he says “You call yourself a Christian”; he goes after your security
Doctrinal problems, legalistic problems, superstitious problems
Emphasis on one or the other are the problems – all three play off of each other and are equally important – can’t focus on one aspect
All comes down to accusation
5 year old sin comes out in 3-D and you’re reminded of the “good old days” when you read the Bible and worshipped God constantly
The reason you’re sad is because the Spirit of God is working in you
You can’t be holy without Me
Remind those enemies that even on the best/worst days, those accusations don’t affect God’s love for me
Doesn’t make me any less desireable toward the heart of Jesus Christ
Remind yourself who you are in Jesus Christ
Have to keep preaching the love of Jesus Christ to your heart
The enemies will never give up
Think about the noble and the pure and the peace of God will be with you

Spring Awakening – OCPAC

Spring Awakening – OCPAC

It’s Rent but with German La Boheme influences!

Talkback with (some of) the actors
Ilse
Moritz
Hanschen
Swing (Krista Pioppi)
Wendla

Talkbacks need question screeners
- No self-undulating praise rambles
- No gushing adoration for the cast
- No “how to be an actor” questions

My question: Did you have any inhibitions mounting this production?

Mary Poppins – Ahmanson Theatre

Wow…Ashley Brown AND Gavin Lee! Absolutely amazing performances!

I love how Bert is completely in control of the set and lighting – at least when Mary lets him.

During “Jolly Holliday”, a couple in the chorus were wearing the film version costumes! Well at least Dick Van Dyke’s costume…Julie Andrews’ costume was trimmed down (at best). I really like Mary and Bert’s costumes (pink dress and purple tux – but not pimpish…English).

She actually said supercalifragilisticexpialidocious backwards! And so did Bert! And then they spelled it out! To be fair I’m quite fond of Ms. Andrews’ recitation and Mr. Van Dyke’s “indubitably”.

No loving to laugh? No man with a wooden leg named Smith? Sure I’m satisfied with the show’s conclusion, I just love that song. Similar fate for the Dawes, Tomes, Mousely, Grubbs, Fidelity Fiduciary Bank and Stay Awake. I like the replacement …I just miss it.

OMG!!! Step In Time! Gavin Lee should you tire of Bert (not that we want that or anything), can you do a Fred Astaire musical? Or is it really Cameron Macintosh’s flair? I don’t care…it’s beautiful!!!

What kind of crowds attend the theatre? As we exited the theatre we noticed lots of litter as well as several empty beer bottles scattered about the theatre. But everybody dressed up for the theatre! It was so confusing! And we had the guy in front of us humming along to the songs from the movie (about half the songs in the show were adapted into fuller musical numbers with elements from the books).

A musical that’s practically perfect in every way!

Galatians 5:16-26
Not things to import from outside of us
When you become a Christian, this foreign thing comes inside with all these attributes
1 Corinthians 13
Walk through these things that are already inside of us
Tonight – overview of the series
19-21 desires/sins/works of the flesh
22-25 works of the spirit
What is the flesh? The bent of the whole person
Core of the motive of the heart
Soul, mind, body, will
Foreign object – The Spirit of God
Need to connect to God
There’s a side living for self and a side living for God
All out war inside us
16-18 Spirit of God opposed to flesh
Walk by God, not gratify flesh
Opposed to law
We have all set standards for our life
Ways for us to achieve “works righteousness”
Righteous -> acceptable
Switch in expectations
What makes him acceptable? No confrontation, just happiness
I want people to approve of me
People pleaser
Bound by this
Must be something wrong with me
The moment someone’s pleased with me -> being under the law
People’s opinions ebb and flow
Spirit opposed to you slaving yourself to people’s opinions
End up compromising ourselves before God
We have this list
All inside us, don’t need to conjure it up
Envy, jealousy, fits of anger are usually there in the average week … but so are love and joy
Every day, both aspects are ebbing and flowing
Geeky computer analogy
Drive A is the works of the flesh
Drive B is the works of the Spirit
Why am I doing what I’m doing
Day by day we can see which drive we were operating off of
This is a process, not a…
The Bible says “You are to grow into your salvation”
Christian life is a fight
Romans 7:15
These habitual things we give in to
The flesh is always tainting what we do
Good and bad motives
Why grow if both are operating?
Recognize the difference and start to decrease the wrong motives and elevate the right motives
Try to pray or meditate on scripture for 30 minutes a day for 30 days and you will be in for the fight of your life
Good indicators
Look at fear, anxiety and pride this week
When operating out of these, look at what’s really happening
This is the way that you’re gonna find value in life
There are counterfeit’s to all the positive values
Look at pride, anxiety, fear
When those rise up they have the power to bless or curse you
Idol or false self will bless or curse you
God is…
Look at the motive of the heart
Embarrass yourself
Try to bring about change in life
When people repeat you, we realize how ridiculous we are
If there’s no fight, be concerned
Words of Jesus are the standard (?)
Not for success but because you’ve called me to it
Incommunicable and communicable aspects of God
Things you catch from being around Him
Incommunicable – things we can never be
Important to sit under the majesty of God and let it pour over you so you can catch these communicable attributes of God
Tired, boring, narrow, self righteous
When you walk in the Spirit, you do it because you love Him
What are these things you see in your life?
This is between God and you
Don’t get full of self pity
Recognize areas where God is working in you
There is a fight for your heart
Every day
Live by the Spirit
For next week, meditate on 1 Corinthians 13
Wasn’t originally read at weddings
These are the things you’re not being

Disneyland

JJ entertained us in front of It’s A Small World before the fireworks with trivia. Including:
50,000 lights on It’s A Small World and 80,000 additional lights on the mall.
Monstro’s teeth – 26 on top, 8 on bottom for a total of 34

Michael opened up the new throw blanket from the add-on purchase (spend $50, earn the right to spend $17 on the blanket) and how the $50 can be cumulative throughout the day (you don’t have to spend all the money in one store at the end of the day, you can spend money throughout the park and then show your receipts at the register).

Exodus 3:1-3
Harold Kirschner – Burning bush was a test to see if Moses would stop, the trick for us is to pay attention to the miracle around us he wants to connect
Barbara Taylor – An Altar In The World
Practicing the Presence by Brother Lawrence
Are we stopping long enough?
Are we paying close enough attention?
Had Moses walked by this bush a million times?
He says “here I am”
Burning bushes all around us that we miss opportunities

I thought we were part of a revolutionary movement that says give up our very lives
When we live in wholeness and really forgive each other, let go of our bitterness
Want to show the world what God is like
Main focus should be God’s presence with us
If Yahweh doesn’t show up, we’re just making noise and we need to stop, turn, and look
We need to remind each other that God wants to hang out with us
Galatians 5
Fruit of the Spirit
Love joy peace patience
What does that look like when it’s lives out?
God has some weird kids an here they all are together
Kind compassionate good and they have self control
As we gather together during the week, we should connect with others and pray “God we’re right here and we want to connect to you”
Maybe God is looking at everyone in this room and saying “I want to be with you…just because”
Our Father who art in Heaven, we’re over here
God, here we are
Reflect on what God’s doing in our hearts – He loves us and He likes us to
