God’s faithfulness
Psalm 136
His Love endures forever x26
David wrote this thinking about what God has done
Not a lot of waiting in today society
We don’t have the character to back it up
We want right now, we want an audience
David knew of process from going to significance to …?
1 Samuel 16:1 – Saul is rejected and Samuel needs to find a new king
David is described as ruddy and handsome
Irish?
Young
Josephus says David is 10 at annoiting
1 Samuel 16:13
David has power
Life gets messy
Power but no audience, no significance
David doesn’t automatically become kIng…he goes through a process…God shapes him
Character building process
Was he willing to be filled with power and wait or do the best he could where he was
Has God called you to something larger than yourself?
How many times did David think, “I shouldn’t have to do this sheep stuff…I’m king!”
If we don’t realize that God was shaping our character, then it’s worthless
David waited approximately 20 years
Don’t like your work, your finances? Time to learn something
We haven’t gotten there yet
God will see us through to the end
David kills Goliath
Goliath is defying God and nobodies getting angry except for David
1 Samuel 17:34-38
David didn’t wait for FedEx to deliver the crown to him
He actively participated in what God gave to him
Something free inside of him and he believed that he could succeed
David knew how faithful God was
Practice killing lions and bears
Committed in his heart to do something significant
20 years between called and crowned
God has a purpose in your life
You are David in your workplace…don’t let others defy God
Share God’s love
God is shaping you a character that can preach to the audience He has given you

God Of This City

Disneyland

After dancing, dinner and dancing to Rumble Kings in the Build-A-Bear Plaza of Downtown Disney, we headed inside to catch some more dancing (again we had the horrible choice between Rumble Kings, Gary Tole AND Scot Bruce…why does Disney hate us so?). As we headed through the bag check, I had an amusing conversation with a supervisor who was opening up a side gate in order to create a no-bag line, which I told her was brilliant. As we avoided firework traffic patterns by ducking through the Main Street boutiques, we happened to run into our friends Rebecca and Charley who had impulsively heeded Disneyland’s call and driven up from San Diego. Not to say we didn’t know they were there, we just had…trouble communicating…yeah…that’s it. We chatted with them for a while and then left them to shop and head back to their hotel room (they were tired earlier so they checked into the Holiday Inn). On our way, we planned a rendezvous with friends at Carnation Plaza in order to go see Scot Bruce, which was an excellent choice. After his last set at 10pm, we decided to raid Fantasyland for it’s whimsical flights of fancy! First stop: Storybook Canal. We filled an entire boat and entertained our guide Ginger with our energy and enthusiasm (she also informed us that Cast Members aren’t supposed to call the finale of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride what most people assume it to be:  hell).  After losing our sea legs, we hopped, skipped and jumped over to King Arthur’s Carousel.  As we exited the carousel, we impulsively decided to have some photographic fun with the motor car outside of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.  Laughter-filled moments later, we decided to take a wild mine train ride through the cavern’s of Big Thunder Mountain.  After that we headed back into Fantasyland to have some more fun with photography and King Arthur’s sword in the stone and the commemorative tea cup.  With much merriment, we retired to Main Street for our closing ritual:  sweet treats in the now vacant Carnation Café.  Surprisingly, Market House was still open (it has traditionally shut it’s doors around 12:15 AM despite the announcement that Main Street will remain open for an additional hour for our convenience), so Laura and I snagged some zebra hot chocolate (a blend of white and milk hot chocolate).  Finally it was time to go.  But as we arrived at the parking structure with the hope of relieving ourselves, we found the bathrooms mysteriously coned off with signs announcing that the restrooms were “Closed for cleaning”.  Nervously approaching a janitor, he assured us that we could still go inside:  they were required to wait until the park was closed before they could actually clean…it just didn’t stop them from getting ready.  With the personal bubble already pierced by his assurance of safe passage to a toilet, I talked with Anthony about his two name tags while I waited for Laura (his janitor costume had a stitched on name tag, but he also had the traditional Cast Member name tag).  He told me that he usually wears his Cast Member tag on his jacket when it’s colder.  His name tag had a bronzed pin attached to it which was a reward for having remained employed on the third shift for 1 year.  As our conversation continued, we chatted about the mysterious third shift Cast Members of the Disneyland Resort…how with great health benefits and entire outfits (minus shoes) aided them in their quest to clean the park before it’s opening the next day.  Anthony really liked working there because he was already a night person and it was a fun and easy job.  Laura returned mid-conversation and besides our exhaustion, we slowly and politely finished our conversation with Anthony and thanked him for all the hard work he does.  Walking back to our car, we commented to each other how nice it was to meet Cast Members who actually gave a damn about the park.

Up – Century 20 @ Bella Terra, Huntington Beach, CA

A fitting 10th film for Pixar, Up is a delightful and charming story with action, adventure, suspense and vistas to knock your socks off! The 3-D experience (while not granting us a viewing of the new short Partly Cloudy…at least not at the midnight, 3-D showing) was extremely well worth the extra cash. It creates more depth and realism in the film…big action sequences look even bigger and tender moments are revitalized with a deeper clarity.

I wasn’t very excited by the trailers before this film…I mean Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs looked fun the first time, but 3-D didn’t really add anything to it…I’m bored by the Ice Age 3 teaser with Scrat…but I can’t complain too much. Can’t be too much of a wet blanket because the trailers are only 20 minutes out of a two hour presentation. Oh yeah! And especially since they gave us a 3-D teaser for Toy Story 3. I mean, I knew Toy Story 3 was coming (despite all the politics of Disney v. Pixar), but this teaser makes me very excited!

Features the voice talents of Ed Asner (Carl Frederickson), Christopher Plummer (Muntz), Delroy Lindo (Beta the Dog) and co-director/storyman Bob Peterson as Dug (SQUIRREL!) AND Alpha! So exciting!

3-D is SOOOO pretty! It was especially cool with the Disney logo and seeing all the additional detail in the background. And the Pixar logo is incredible!!! It could be described as a simple camera rotation, but it’s eye-popping in 3-D!

The music is once again phenomenally orchestrated by Michael Giacchino. Not to say that there’s anything wrong with Randy or Thomas Newman, but Giacchino’s work is a perfect fit for this adventure. The soundtrack takes you on a highlight tour of the film and you can see it in your head…it’s just beautiful!

Pixar has done it again!

Life isn’t a destination, it’s the journey.

Night At The Museum: Battle Of The Smithsonian – Century 20 @ Bella Terra, Huntington Beach, CA

Absolutely BRILIANT sequel. The plot isn’t hackneyed and the adventure is out of this world!

Not too fond of Bill Hader’s portrayal of General George Custer. Although Hader is funny (see SNL and Hot Rod), I didn’t quite appreciate his humor and bravado as Custer. Then again, they were just using Custer in the same way they used Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams) in the last film (as a cowardly, waxy version of the heroic person they’re molded after)…but they did it weird! Oh well. I was happy to recognize Bill Hader though (I couldn’t tell it was him on the cardboard cutout/poster).

Were there a lot of American “The Office” cameos (Andy, Kelli, and Cal) at Ricky Gervais’ request (he the star actor, writer, director of the British “The Office” and executive producer of the American “The Office”)? Or was it merely happy coincidence? I always wonder in these cases (Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor and “Beyond the Sea” co-star Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane) and then assume the worst…I mean it is Hollywood. Sometimes it’s good (this movie) and sometimes it’s bad (Superman Returns). ;-)

Angels & Demons – Century 20 @ Bella Terra, Huntington Beach, CA

Laura says they changed the book, but to hear her tell it, it sounds like the smaller semantical changes that I hated with the adaptation of Harry Potter and Azkaban. Sorry lover!

A delightfully talented cast including Ewan McGregor and Stellan Skarsgård, I enjoyed this film almost as much as Da Vinci Code (I’ve long since gotten over my piety concerning THAT piece of fiction), but not as much as I’ve enjoyed the National Treasure movies. As I cracked midway through the film, “Can’t we just watch Ewan McGregor solve puzzles and kick ass?” To be fair, my problem isn’t with Tom Hanks as the puzzle solver…or with his character Robert Langdon for that matter…I just prefer American history (and the history of it’s European colonizers) to church/religious history. But I do love all the juicy historical tidbits and the life-threatening scenarios our heroes always get themselves into.

Before the movie started there were a lot of trailers (including Nine, not 9, that I am SOOOOOOO excited about). There were so many trailers that the intro of the movie was boring and sluggish until Ewan McGregor showed up. Then things started to get interesting.

All in all an exciting adaptation that is well worthy of being on your summer movie list.

Star Trek – Century 20 @ Bella Terra, Huntington Beach, CA

This is my event movie for this summer…if I didn’t see any other movie this summer I would be happy…well the first half of summer (Harry Potter)…well for May (no wait there’s Up and Terminator)…well I left the theatre feeling uplifted and optimistic and just plain jazzed.

Not only is the film chock full of inside references (which are geek-tastic every time), but the story is absolutely fantastic. The science fiction is at acceptable levels (black holes are very destructive and space is sometimes silent) and the acting is perfect.

Yay! It’s Jennifer Morrison (Cameron from House) as Kirk’s mom! Talk about awesome big screen cameos!

If the end of the credits says that the movie is for somebody or in honor of somebody, that usually means that person died during the production of the film, right?  [checks IMDB]…NOOOOO!!!  Majel Barret died!  *tear*

Our relationship with our bible
Two points, can’t fit them both in
Do you read your bible everyday? How much per week? Source of hope or discouragement?
Benefits without commitments
Strengthened by it’s wisdom, frightened by it’s standards
If you’re not in your bible, you won’t understand His love
We know it has answers and hope, but so do other things
1. Flawless – Psalms 12
2. Perfect – 19
3. Spirit and life – john 6:63
Living, active, discerning
First Principle:  The bible is wisdom and understanding for us today
In a given day you make 300 decisions
Grace usually starts her day while he is “in prayer”
She makes 300 decisions getting dressed
90% trivial
Wear, get up, snooze, breakfast, email or espn, lunch, respond to person, talk to boss, interact with people
Should I deduct this from taxes? Business decision? Buy house, yellow light, this job, tithe, matt adn grace to dinner
It’s like Easter Egg hunting
You see wisdom that you want and you grab it
Motivations, goals, hurts, victories
Bucket mostly has good stuff
But we’re also shaped by earthly things
Green eggs had money
Then comes peanut butter cups
You are proactive – you collect the priorities you trust
Our God influence is probably less than our worldly influence…generally speaking
Who do you want shaping you? The Word
2 Samuel 24 – David’s troubles
David took a census
Worldly reality way more than God’s reality
Big numbers bolster worldly confidence, pride
2 Cor 4:16-18
The numbers shape my tithe – doesn’t give a set amount, gives a percentge
He was a teller
He liked numbers
Got to the training phase about counterfeits
This is a real dollar, what it does in light, what it feels like
Taught him God’s reality first
When you know the real, it’s easier to identify the false
One counterfeit didn’t slip by him because he knew what a real dollar felt like

Challenge to figure out what God’s best for us is
Lead me to your heart
Daily practice makes the difference
1 day without and you’ll know
2 days and your spouse/instructor will know
3 days and the whole world will know

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Century 20 @ Bella Terra, Huntington Beach, CA

Lot of fun, lots of action…

Yay Ryan Reynolds! Sure he’s only there part of the time, but he’s very funny and sarcastic…basically my kind of guy ;-)

Yay Gambit! Sure he’s a pre-pubescent punk, but he’s got a N’awlins accent, throws playing cards and fights with a quarterstaff…what’s not to love?

And of course yay Hugh Jackman and Liev Schrieber!! Two great actors who really embody their characters, able to express the animal rage at the core of the savage Sabretooth and the wicked Wolverine.
