THEY DID THE BUNNY HOP DURING THE FINAL CHORUS OF DON’T BE THE BUNNY!!!! OMFG!!!! IT FITS PERFECTLY AND IT’S HILARIOUS!

This is the fifth production of this musical that I’ve seen (on Broadway, technically off-Broadway; the national tour at OCPAC; PCPA Theatrefest in Solvang; Laguna Beach High School) and I learn something new every time I see it. It is such a brilliantly constructed musical with thought-provoking content wrapped in comedy that I could see it five more times and still not be tired of it. The music is jazzy and fun, the dialogue and lyrics pop with cynicism and wit and the characters are lovable despite of, and even for, their depravity.

Now enough ranting about how great the show is. Some minor negative values for this production: it is a community college production run by community college students for many of whom this is their first time. Light cues were a little slow and fast at times, but then again I saw it opening night and the quality can only improve with more runs. But it’s not all bad for this production: the set is fascinatingly Brechtian in it’s simplicity (simple scaffolding giving the actors the minimal amount of levels and space they need to accomplish their tasks) and most of the actor’s are ringers brought in from outside the college. Directed by my godmother, Janet Miller (no I’m not just writing a positive review for her, appearances to the contrary), it includes a lot of people she’s worked with previously at the Torrance Theatre Company, and the majority turn in fabulous performances (I was slightly displeased with Old Man Strong/Hot Blades Harry as the two characters were far too similar).  The cast includes Steve DeForrest, Michael Immel, Marty Baum, Craig Proctor and Erich Schroder.

All in all, a decent production with plenty of hilarity! Highly recommended.

And I love what they did with the restrooms.

A decent production of one of my favorite musicals, my first complaint is with the program. It kind of awkwardly describes whats actually going on in the play. It says that the story has two plot lines: one is an author writing the screenplay of one of his novels and the other is that same author dealing with the Hollywood politics as his screenplay is torn to shreds (or something to that effect). It also has two “cast lists”: the Hollywood cast and the movie cast. It is kind of hard at first blush to interpret that statement if you’re unfamiliar with the play, so let me try and lay it out for you in a less confusing manner.

Stine, the author of City of Angels, is adapting his novel into a screenplay for his director, Buddy Fidler. While Stine is writing the screenplay, we see the film noir detective story unfold on stage, starring private detective and former LA policeman Stone as he gets wrapped up in one of the most brilliant mysteries since Dashiell Hammett first wrote about that damned black bird.

This production features a lot of talented performances (especially Buddy Fidler and Donna), but the real star of the show is the stagecraft. Fullerton is known for it’s stagecraft and the vision they bring to life here is nothing short of brilliant. Dozens of motorized platforms move the set about, making the scene changes dynamic and smooth. The curtains behave like the lens of a camera, focusing our attention during the film on the movie characters as they act out their story.

The costumes were very nicely done, but I wish that the film noir aspect could have been further emphasized through use (or lack) of color for those characters’ costumes. But it wasn’t my first complaint about the show.

I don’t want to be overly picky, but oh well: Stine was (in my opinion) the weakest singer on stage. He did all right, but he could have been better…sigh…oh well.

This is one of my favorite musicals (Cy Coleman is one of my all time favorite musical composers) and this production definitely did it justice.
