The Searchers

The Searchers

Mose (Hank Worden) was in Davy Crockett and the River Pirates. “Smokin’ up a new batch Mason?”
Lorrie’s father (Mr. Jorgensen – John Qualen) was in Casablanca. He’s in the resistance and contacts Victor Laszlo in Cafe American. “My name is Berger”.

WTF is up with John Wayne? His character flips 180 degrees at the end of the movie. So does Natalie Wood’s character! I mean sure you can try and explain it with character choices, but it’s still very awkward at first blush. According to the commentary, the book has a much darker ending which they couldn’t use in the movie….but it makes things somewhat awkward…..

But it’s still really funny, ya chunkhead.

Is The Missing (2003) an updated version of this story? It’s based on a book after all…

How odd! Both movies seem similar at first glance and they’re both based on books, but they’re different books….sigh guess I’ll just have to do a whole lot of reading….Thomas Eidson wrote a book called The Last Ride that was turned into The Missing and Alan Le May wrote The Searchers novel that was adapted into the movie.

The Last Days by Joel Rosenberg

Even though I read The Ezekiel Option (Book 3) before reading The Last Jihad (Book 1) and now The Last Days (Book 2), I really wish I hadn’t because now I have to read book 3 all over again….sigh.   The Wikipedia spoiler highlights just aren’t good enough!  Rosenberg has the talent as a writer to suck a reader in with characters and political/military excitement like you wouldn’t believe. I read this book in a week and usually I take at least a month to read a book. I don’t really have much else to say except how incredibly enjoyable and engaging Rosenberg is as an author. Oh and he continues his prophetic streak. The book begins with a terrorist attack in Gaza (don’t worry it’s not a one-trick pony) that kills Yasser Arafat and attacks a U.S. diplomatic convoy. “Two weeks before The Last Days was published, a U.S. diplomatic convoy was ambushed in Gaza. Thirteen months later, Yasser Arafat died” (Wikipedia).

All Shook Up – MTW

This show is just so much fun.  Set to the music of Elvis Presley, it’s traditionally described as James Dean meets Shakespeare (specifically Twelfth Night and A Midsummer’s Night Dream) and it’s a very enjoyable romantic jukebox musical.

I have no complaints about any of the performances.  I get to hate old people again because there’s one song that takes place in a “statue garden” and then it breaks into this musical number and the statues move about (they’re really people).  The audience decided to applaud for the statues after their first movement.  I GOTTA stop going to matinées….

There was also a really weird 4th wall break that happened midway through the second act….Chad (the Elvis/James Dean character) says something and a group of people behind and to the left of me (rear house left) shouted/screamed an affirmative answer and he broke the wall to go, “Yeah!”  It was odd…but not horrible?

The cast was actually quite star studded.  Bets Malone played Natalie (the lead girl who falls for Chad) and did a wonderful job. Natalie’s father, Jim, was played by the actor who played Doody in the movie version of Grease.  It was interesting for me because when I saw the national tour his character was a balding, overweight mechanic and having him become “cool” was much more amusing than this time around.  You can also tell that Doody is a dancer, because he moves very well for his age.  And John Massey Jr. stepped in as Sheriff Earl, the town mayor’s enforcer.  It was mildly amusing seeing such a talented actor play that role with the think pilot glasses and the Midwest officer-of -the-law uniform, but I didn’t double over with laughter when I saw him…maybe I expected too much?  Who knows.

All in all, a very enjoyable production that I’m glad I saw.

The Last Jihad by Joel Rosenberg

That’s right I’m still awake.  Why?  Because Joel Rosenberg write a book you can’t put down when you get to a certain point.  Sure he abuses the classic foreshadowing techniques of great fiction (if a character swears to let nothing interfere with his family’s upcoming vacation, you know that character will die), but the way Rosenberg writes…..I mean I read The Ezekiel Option about a year ago and I can vividly remember having to just stop what I was doing, take the book and go lie on the couch and read for several hours.

Joel Rosenberg’s claim to fame (aside from being a phenomenal fiction writer) is that he’s somewhat of a prophet through his books.  The Last Jihad is his first novel and was nearly completed before 9/11 happened.  And in the book a hijacked plane attacks the President, who discovers it’s an Iraqi plot and charges into a war with Iraq.  And that’s just the part that was written before 9/11 happened.

I can’t think of what else to write except that Rosenberg is an incredible writer with great style and a phenomenal storyteller.  It’s Tom Clancy meets LaHaye and Jenkins (those nutty Left Behind folk) and it’s electrifying.  Check it out!

Penny Arcade! – Bordering On The Semi-Tasteful
Scott reflects on his lack of true, heartfelt sympathy for the passing of Gary Gygax, while Tycho and Gabe honor his passing with words and pictures and sentimental memories of childhood rolls.

DDR Couples
While Tycho pondered a game called Pattapon, he compared other rhythm based games like Guitar Hero and DDR, saying that DDR only required you to hit certain notes on certain beats, but never specifies in what manner the notes must be hit, leading to an explosive number of possibilities (referencing this video). Very enjoyable!

Vantage Point

A very enjoyable political thriller. What I was most impressed with was the concept and their execution of it (forgive the pun). Revolving around a terrorist attack on the US President in Spain, the story is patched together from (roughly) 6 different perspectives, shown one at a time with rewind montages at the end of each until we tie everything together at the end. They did a really good job taking care of continuity – although with anything of this magnitude, little bits and pieces will always slip by, but it’s very negligible in the long run. The main set piece they filmed in was an old square in Spain where the President is arriving to make a speech and is subsequently assassinated. What really incredible about this portion of the film is that it’s almost hard to imagine the number of cameras they had set up to tell the story from so many different perspectives (I especially like how they directly use the footage from the handheld camera that Forrest Whitaker has)…the complexity of the shoot must have rivaled only the 5 minute continuous shot from Atonement.

Decent performances from all the actors. Wonderfully enjoyable plot line that is somewhat political (dealing with the nature of terrorism and so forth) and really exciting twists!
